A new year is upon us; a time of reflection, resolutions and setting goals we hope to accomplish in the future ahead. For many of us, we vow that this will be the year we will dedicate to our physical fitness and wellbeing. Ever since he was a young boy, Granville Mayers has always been fascinated and inspired by physically fit and strong people. His father had an amazing physique and throughout most of his youth he aspired to achieve a well sculpted body of his own. “Growing up I always wanted to be the strongest or most athletic,” Granville recalls. “My role models were strong powerful athletes like Walter Payton, men that were not only athletic, but also strong and that’s who I wanted to be.”
Born of Guyanese and Bajan heritage, Granville was raised in Mississauga. He attended Woodland Secondary School, where he was a natural athlete, participating in football, basketball and track and field. After graduation, he intended on pursuing a professional football career. He was signed with the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders, but due to the fact that he was prone to injuries, his career was over before it began.
Still passionate about physical fitness and maintaining his athletic physique Granville began personal training. His expertise was strength training, and due to the interest he received he was training people wherever the space was available, renting out community centers, and meeting clients at the park.
Over the years, he had gained plenty of experience working at almost every gym in Ontario, however he found that while he was getting results, he couldn’t agree with some of their ethics. Granville decided that the time had come for him to branch off and establish his own gym where he could run things his way.
Granville founded his gym Athletic Leaders in 2002. They are a strength training facility that guarantees results in twelve weeks. With over fifteen years experience in the business Coach Granville Mayers is passionate about improving and maintaining physical fitness always educating himself, and taking courses to receive up to date certifications that will help his clients achieve their personal fitness goals.
Coach Granville is certified as a Personal Trainer and Fat Loss Expert with distinctions that include: Strongfirst Level 2 Kettlebell Instructor, Strongfirst Barbell Instructor, Strongfirst Bodyweight Instructor and Flexible Steel Instructor. “I live, eat, and breathe fitness and training,” shares Granville expressing his passion for this art and ability to help people achieve the best shape of their lives.
“Many of our members come to the gym with the intention of losing weight,” Granville explains. “Most of them know that miracles don’t happen overnight, but they are pleased with the programs and training offered at the gym, especially because each client is encouraged to proceed at their own pace.”
All of the trainers at Athletic Leaders are certified in the latest personal training certifications. They promise to make you fall in love with fitness, so you will look forward to their many training programs, always being challenged in a positive and safe manner. They provide both personal training as well as large group training welcoming everyone of all ages. Their clients range from ages 15-60 diverse men and women from all walks of life.

Kettlebell instruction is their passion and ongoing obsession. The kettlebell is a great tool to train with on your own. But to do so, you must learn how to use it safely, efficiently, and effectively. Students will make immediate strength and performance gains once they learn the fundamentals and the principle-based system that supports them.
“Some people have let themselves go over many years, and the #1 reason they come to our gym is because they feel comfortable,” Granville explains. “People have come to us after going to other gyms, feeling unwelcome there because they didn’t fit the image.”
