Baha Mar, a little slice of Las Vegas in the Caribbean

The Caribbean isn’t just about sun-kissed beaches. There’s every kind of entertainment available, and if you like the Las Vegas vibe, look no further than Baha Mar. The resort on Nassau is mostly famous for its casino, but even if you’re not into gambling there’s plenty to do, especially if the Caribbean heavens decide to open. In fact, you can fill several days without ever leaving the resort.

How to get there
The great thing about the Caribbean is as long as you know where to fly to, your destination is never far from the airport. That’s the case with Baha Mar, the resort is only about seven miles from Nassau. Hotel transfers are available, but taxis are readily available, reasonably priced and no more likely to rip you off than anywhere else. A ride to Baha Mar will cost you about $40 and takes less than 15 minutes.

Where to stay
There are three hotels at Baha Mar and from any of them you can access the fun activities available such as water sport, golf and night clubs. They are all modern and well-appointed, as is everything here – after all, the entire resort sprang up from nothing only five years ago!

The largest hotel is the Grand Hyatt. Family friendly, it has six pools, its own private beach, a spa and 1,800 guest rooms including 230 suites.

The SLS hotel is a little more edgy. A great choice for young couples, this is where you’ll find the night life. There are 299 rooms and 107 suites, many of which have balconies overlooking Cable Beach.

Last but not least, the Rosewood has an air of old fashioned colonial luxury. If you’re more into pink gins on the veranda than tequila slammers in the nightclub, this is the place to stay. There are 230 rooms, many with butler service and four-poster beds, and the hotel has its own private beach and two exclusive pools.

The gaming
There’s more to Baha Mar than the casino, but at the same time, there’s no denying the gaming is this resort’s most famous attraction. These days, we are all used to the massive choice of games in cyberspace. Baha Mar has a range that can stand up alongside even the best online casino in Canada. There are more than 1,000 slots and 18 different table games to choose from.

Some casinos have a reputation for shutting out the light so you lose all track of time. None of that at Baha Mar, like everywhere else at the resort, there are floor to ceiling windows and sea views all around!

Dining
With 26 restaurants and cafes, it’s an understatement to say you’re spoilt for choice. Highlights include Carna steakhouse and 25N seafood restaurant, but there’s seriously something for every taste and budget, from fine dining to fast food on the go.

There’s also a great choice of places to stop for a drink.  The Jazz Bar has live piano music every night, while the Monkey Bar is the hip place to be seen. But to soak up the Caribbean air and watch the sun set with a cocktail, the Skybar at SLS is not to be missed.
