The Caribbean islands are a destination of wondrous beauty. Pristine beaches, blue waters, and an abundance of dance and music make any vacation to the Caribbean a memorable one. The Caribbean community is quite widespread across the world and has strong roots and traditions that they enjoy celebrating. The essence of their homeland stays with them forever and is shared with the outside world wherever and whenever possible.

In countries like Canada, which are culturally aware and host many events from summer music festivals to the famous Toronto Caribbean Festival, there are so many chances to enjoy the exquisiteness of Caribbean life away from the islands. For a visitor, it is an ideal opportunity to immerse themselves in this extravagant celebration and learn about the various Caribbean islands and their distinctness. To partake in these festivities that are as multicoloured as they are enchanting is an unforgettable experience full of vigour and passion.

New York

The New York Caribbean Festival held in Brooklyn is an annual event that sees the Caribbean spirit come out in full force and take over the mind, body, and soul of everyone present. Comprising of a parade with dancers wearing fancy regional costumes the ambience at the festival is cheerful and happening. Food stalls pop up everywhere serving a fusion of Caribbean comfort food mixed with a more Americanized version of the cuisine. The carnival, organised by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, is among many other events throughout the year held to bring awareness about the multifaceted Caribbean philosophy.

London

The diversity of people found in London is what makes it such a spectacular city to visit or live. Not only do the locals enjoy the benefits of a multi-cultural society, but they also enjoy celebrating each other’s festivals and traditions. The Notting Hill Carnival is one of those occasions where locals and visitors come on out and revel the Caribbean spirit with enthusiasm wearing bright coloured sequenced costumes.

Food and music play an integral part of this event which can be enjoyed by one and all. Notting Hill is one of the swankiest and trendiest spaces in the capital city of England and has a very hipster vibe to it that adds to the event’s eccentric nature. Incorporating the many features of island life amidst a busy metropolitan city makes this carnival genuinely unique, and an essential addition to any travel bucket list.

Birmingham

Not so much of a carnival, Birmingham’s Caribbean Food and Music Festival has gained in popularity since it’s initial occurrence a few years back. What started as a small food event, highlighting the unique cuisine of the region, has grown into an eagerly awaited yearly happening.

An excellent place to take in the smell of jerk chicken while listening to Reggae beats, Victoria Square forms the epicentre of all the activities during the festival. The vibe in Birmingham is very chilled out and relaxed. Often, popular Caribbean music and TV stars make special appearances to sing on the stage. There is a certain exclusivity to the Caribbean lifestyle and being a part of a Caribbean festival anywhere in the world is an experience not to be missed.
