As a consumer we all have to develop particular habits that ultimately keep us healthy. Food wisdom places challenges before us like what foods need to be cleaned even if they are packaged well.
Meats
Make a habit of washing all your raw meats. Much of these items come straight from the slaughter-processing plant, and although washed, never assume complete cleanliness. Processed foods require observation and smell, looking for awkward aromas and discoloration. The food sector is regulated well, but a busy production floor could let pass meat that is laced with: contamination, mold, affected blood, or numerous things that will make you sick.
Vegetables and fruits
Always wash at home. Vegetables should be put into fresh water to soak for some time, and then washed with running water. Fruit needs to be washed and then wiped dry/clean. Remember that most fruit has a level of wax, or some form of protectant and preservative covering, which can be offensive to your taste buds. A little effort and planning can make your grocery shopping and preparation successful.
Processed foods
Touch, look and smell. Always check the date on the can, or package. If it is way over the allotted time, don’t buy it. If it is close to the date and you will consume it that day or week, go for it. The cost of food is crazy high, while our pocketbooks have shrunk over time. Appreciate and respect the food you purchase. Nourishment comes at a cost, so be your own inspector, regulating all you buy and consume.
