Have you ever visited downtown Toronto, and noticed more homelessness than usual? In reality, homelessness is everywhere. Did you know that on any given day over 8,500 people are experiencing homelessness? As you can see, that’s a relatively high number. If there are 10 there are still issues to be brought to attention, but 8,500? In this article, I will be talking about the main cause of homelessness, what Toronto has done to improve, and what they need more of.

Two words: Affordable housing. The prices for a house anywhere let alone Toronto are crazy high. So, if the middle class can’t afford it, how do you expect people living on the streets to get back up on their feet?

According to homesfirst.on.ca, “94% of those experiencing homelessness in Toronto want permanent housing, but face barriers in securing it, and 80% said they need more affordable housing options. Lastly, in the past 10 years, the average market rent for a one-bedroom has increased by 33%.

Fortunately, Toronto has finally acknowledged this need for affordable housing. Their “Housing Action Plan 2022-2026,” wants to increase housing supply, housing choice, as well as affordability for current and future residents.

Toronto made an amazing step to address this problem, but much remains to be done such as: more homeless shelters, and since 30% of homeless are people living with mental health issues and 20% with addiction, rehab and support centres would help.

Individuals and communities must unite and provide support to those in need. Together, we must find long-term solutions to this problem. It is unacceptable for anyone to be deprived of a safe and secure place to rest their head.
