Metrolinx’s vision for a connected region is about more than trains, buses, new stations or lines on a map. Transit is about people and possibilities. It’s making more happy birthdays, more meetups with grandkids and more family members at festivities. It’s about getting more people where they want to go and enabling the things they love to do so they can live their very best life.
Transit creates economic and environmental benefits for generations to come – it is a catalyst for change in our communities. Metrolinx is changing transit to make it better. Because better transit will create possibilities and a greater region for everyone.
Metrolinx is focused on delivering a transit network that puts customers first. And while this vision will play out across the region over the next decade and more, there are real improvements being made every day.
The Ontario Line will reduce crowding on transit lines and roads during rush hour. This new subway line will change how you get around Toronto – faster, more direct trips to the places that matter to you. It will take you to your morning coffee before the office faster, to the best food and drink options the city has to offer, major sporting events and cricket club matches, and activities for your kids. A new way to connect to and from downtown is on the way – construction for the Ontario Line begins this winter at Exhibition Station.
The Scarborough Subway Extension will give you a smooth, seamless connection to the city’s eastern hub. It will bring dependable and fast transit to the places you need to get to, like the Scarborough Town Centre, the Scarborough Civic Centre and Library, and the Scarborough General Hospital. With connections to popular bus routes at every station, and links with the Eglinton Crosstown and Stouffville GO train lines, it will be your launch pad to experience the city and the region. Construction has been going at full speed at the launch shaft site at Sheppard and McCowan to make way for the tunnel boring machine.
Get ready to get where you’re going quicker with the Eglinton Crosstown LRT – to your dream job, to meet family, to grab lunch with friends, or to that dreaded dentist appointment. You’ll get there without the usual excuses for being late with up to 60% faster travel times and links to 54 bus routes, 3 TTC subway stations, 3 GO lines – Kitchener, Barrie and Stouffville – and the UP Express between Union Station and Pearson airport. With 25 stops between Kennedy in the east and Mount Dennis in the west, residents and visitors will be easily connected to destinations including Yonge and Eglinton Centre, the Ontario Science Centre, Sunnybrook Park and Aga Khan Museum. The wait is almost over – the entire track is now in place, with vehicle and systems testing underway.
Get ready to make new connections. As Mississauga and Brampton continue to grow with new residents, businesses and amenities, fast and convenient transit is increasingly vital. The Hurontario LRT will connect your businesses with more customers, your family to extended family, and you to a world of dining, shopping and cultural activities. Travel through two bustling cities, with connections to GO Transit, Mississauga Transitway, Brampton Transit, Züm and MiWay. Service frequency will be 7.5 minutes during peak hours and 10-15 minutes during off-peak hours. The 18-kilometre Hurontario LRT line will operate in its own dedicated lane ensuring a smooth, reliable and convenient ride along the region’s busiest street. Construction is underway at Port Credit GO Station, with the tunnels being created under the GO Lakeshore West tracks. The ground surface is being prepared for the installation of track this winter.
The Hamilton LRT is the gateway to a thriving, more connected Hamilton. This rapid transit line is being built to accommodate this ever-evolving city as it grows, meeting the travel demands of tomorrow and connecting into the City’s BLAST Network transit vision. This new transit system will mean more local jobs, more sustainable communities and more infrastructure. With project funding committed, work on the Hamilton LRT – one of the largest infrastructure investments in the city’s history – is ramping up.
GO Expansion is the backbone of Metrolinx’s transit vision. It’s the key to creating a connected region for everyone. GO Transit will become an all-day, all-direction, schedule-free service, with trains every 15 minutes or more. That means four times more service than what’s offered today, so you can live, work and play wherever you choose. Other improvements include a faster and more efficient fleet, running on electricity. And there are also new stations opening in Toronto to facilitate better travel – King-Liberty, St. Clair-Old Weston, Bloor-Lansdowne, Mt. Dennis, Woodbine, Caledonia, and Finch-Kennedy.
With all this progress, you can already see the difference. And there’s more to come – a truly connected region, with better transit enabling endless possibilities. It’s Happening.
