The Poetic Word

Postal Delay

BY GLORIA O’KOYEE

Dear Postal Office,

I hope things would run smooth quickly,

So, things can pick up.

Mixed feelings wrapping around the brain

And heart, like a birthday present.

Standing alongside with the people to

Fight for their rights in this part of town,

Yet how much is compromised for letters

Piled up from loved ones,

Away from public eye,

This soul ponders.

Months went by,

STG status already delays as privacy

Gets invaded for safety reasons.

See the intentions as protocols

Yet a frustrating process,

But it comes with the territory.

For having loved ones.

Trickling effect of doing time

The moment a choice was made

To do the bid with your people

And your person.

The sound of paper tickles the eardrums,

Reading out words sends sensations

Down the spine,

Skin explodes all around in goosebumps.

A connection that used to be the only form

Of communication

Before phones

Before visits were allowed.

As everyone complains about their Amazon packages,

Loved ones wonder when they can see

The handwritten messages that got

Souls intertwined.

These letters.

Lifelines.

Even though times has passed where

Words on paper maybe less

Appreciated than before,

Could still leave lasting memories

During the coldest spells behind the walls.

Bringing warmth in children and families

Weary hearts

Behind closed doors.

But nothing much can be done

Except pray for resolution,

Because even when things get clear,

The last ones to get their mail

After backlog,

Would be the ones

That was left behind.
