Simons Debuts in Toronto; Where Toronto’s Heart Meets Simons’ Vision

“At Simons, we believe our spaces are places to discover, to be inspired, and to engage with fashion, Canadian art, and design.” — Bernard Leblanc, President and CEO of Simons

The moment hangs suspended. I am standing just inside Yorkdale’s newest entrance, the air electric with possibility. Final adjustments are made. Simons’ first Toronto store is arriving, carrying the weight of its 1840 heritage and the pulse of Canada’s most diverse city. Crucially, it’s arriving with a team that mirrors Toronto itself, associates hired from every background and culture, chosen deliberately to ensure the store reflects Toronto’s diverse communities. This is Simons’ promise; to be a space where everyone sees themselves.

I noticed a temporary barrier. Beyond it, the “Perennial Ephemera” light bathes the space, a metaphor for growth and transformation that feels particularly apt for this historic retailer’s Toronto debut.

Bernard Leblanc steps forward, his presence calm yet charged. “This store opening,” he states, his voice resonating with conviction. “It’s Simons embracing Toronto’s vibrant spirit. We’ve invested nearly $100 million and created 400 opportunities here because we believe in this city’s energy. Our team is Toronto. Our collaborations, like those with local artists featured here and championed through our Fabrique 1840 platform, celebrate Canadian creativity. Our commitment? It’s to offer experiences that inspire, choices that matter.”

The barrier lifts. I stared at awe at the “Solarium,” “Forest Diorama,” and the breathtaking “Fabric of Life” that transformed the entrance into a living canvas where nature and fashion intertwined.

The crowd flows in, each receiving a little token of appreciation. They pause to interact with the diverse team members who welcome them in multiple languages, sharing stories behind the installations and the local products. Within the store, dedicated sections spotlight Toronto-based ceramicists, textile artists, and jewelers part of the over 400 creators Fabrique 1840 supports nationwide. This is community engagement in action, providing a vital platform for local talent.

I took time to explore the curated zones: Twik, Icône, Contemporaine, Simons Maison, and discover the Édito department’s high-end offerings. I encountered the Vision program. Here, garments crafted from recycled or lower-impact materials are displayed as a central pillar of Simons’ offering. It’s a clear signal: sustainability and values-driven choices are integral to the Simons experience, accessible to all.

Standing amidst the vibrant energy, I see it clearly. Simons has found a way to embed themselves into the Toronto fashion culture. By hiring a team that embodies the city’s diversity, actively elevating local artists through Fabrique 1840 and in-store features, and embedding sustainability through the Vision program, Simons demonstrates a profound understanding. Their investment is a commitment to being a responsible, creative, and genuinely inclusive community partner.

This Yorkdale location is a testament to what happens when a historic Canadian retailer embraces the future by reflecting the true heart of the community it serves.
