I was at home, a place filled with safety and comfort—a place where I could set aside my worries and focus on my goals, but every time I decided I was finally going to start, I heard knocking at the door.
“Go away. You’re distracting me,” I said. The knocking stopped. Finally, they’d left me alone. I thought I could use this time to get stronger spiritually. Then the knocking started again. Wow, this person must love annoying me. “Did you not hear me the first time? I said GO AWAY.” The knocking stopped.
At this point, 42 hours had passed, and I still hadn’t gotten any work done. I decided to set myself up for success and…Knock… Knock…
For the final time, someone knocked on the door. This time, I slowly went to the peephole and froze in disbelief. I opened the door, and there was a mirror on the other side, with a guilty reflection staring back. That’s when I realized: the problem…. was me.
Sometimes we get distracted by what the world has to offer. We try to reach our goals but keep stumbling over that one thing in our lives. We always say to ourselves, “I’ll definitely stop this and become focused,” but our hearts lure us back to that one thing that’s destroying our progress. We try to block it out but yearn for it, crave the feeling it gives us. Suddenly, we start thinking, “What good has come out of all this wasted time? Why am I like this?” Then we blame everything except ourselves.
We need to stop this cycle. We need to recognize that the only thing holding us back is our own lack of discipline. By acknowledging our role in our distractions, we can begin to renew our self-discipline and truly focus on our goals.
In the end, the knocking at the door was a wake-up call. It wasn’t the world distracting me—it was me distracting myself. True progress comes from within, from confronting our own weaknesses and taking responsibility for our actions. Only then can we break free from the cycle of distraction and achieve the goals we set for ourselves.
