The Cricket World Cup is underway in England and Wales for West Indies who played their first match against Pakistan on Friday, May 31st.

Windies 108 for 3 won by 7 wickets and held Pakistan to 105 runs in the low scoring ODI match.

Fast bowling was the key to the Windies victory in their opening match for the 2019 World Cup. Oshane Thomas, who is the youngest member of their squad, led the way routing Pakistan for their second lowest total ever in World Cup history.

Though Thomas was the main wicket-taker, it was an entire team effort. Andre Russell came in after the opening bowlers and had put his team in command but that was only the beginning. As he concluded his run, Russell finished with an 18-ball burst. His bowling was concise and consistent forcing Pakistan out at a rapid speed. One thing specifically that many noticed about Russell’s bowling was that 15 of the 18 balls he bowled were short of a length. Despite their horrible loss, Pakistan had the tournament favorite, England chasing 359 for a win just a couple of weeks prior to the beginning of the World Cup.

The Men in Maroon picked up their win with 36.2 overs to spare, the highest number of balls remaining in a World Cup match.

Less than a week later, Jason Holder and the Windies team played their second game of the tournament against Australia who beat them by 15 runs.

Australia lost four early wickets batting first however came back to clinch their 10th consecutive ODI victory. Led by Steven Smith and Nathan Coulter-Nile, the team did not miss a chance on the field and finished on 288.

West Indies, on the other hand, could not break Coulter-Nile with the bat despite Oshane Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell, Andre Russell and Shai Hope all having their own moments in the game. Coulter-Nile played mainly short balls earlier in the match eventually surpassing his previous best, 34, for Australia and made it as far as 92.

Russell was exhilarating every time he was on the pitch but ended up limping off after being seen nursing his knee.

The Windies pacers showed sparks but it wasn’t consistent enough to secure their second victory. “We don’t want to send messages, we want to win games,” said a vehement Carlos Brathwaite. “We scored 421 against New Zealand, everyone said we sent a message. We shot Pakistan out for 105, everyone said we sent a message.

“And today we lost. The dressing room is gutted. We thought we had Australia on the ropes. Regardless of whether the message is sent or not, we want to win.”

Windies hope to bounce back from the loss on Monday, June 10th when they take on South Africa who lost three matches since the tournament began.

The West Indies 2024 cricket season has come to an end. This year was filled with ups and downs for the team, but the team has showcased resilience, raw talent, and challenges thrown at them in the entire season. The season was filled with remarkable individual performances and team dynamics.

The West Indies kick-started the season with a tough tour of South Africa, where they struggled against the Proteas’ fast bowlers. Despite their competitive standpoint, the Caribbean was met with a series loss due to their weak batting. The team instantly bounced back when playing against Bangladesh, winning the series two to zero. Captain Kraigg Braithwaite stood out, playing his eighty-sixth consecutive test match, breaking Sir Garry Sobers’ record of eighty-five.

His steady performance, along with Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s promising contributions, were key to the team’s success. The bowlers, led by Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph, performed well, with newcomer Jayden Seales showing great potential. However, inconsistency in the batting lineup remains a problem that needs addressing.

The ODI season was dominated by the ICC Cricket World Cup. The West Indies entered as underdogs and faced tough competition. They started with a thrilling win against Afghanistan, thanks to a century by Nicholas Pooran.

Unfortunately, the team struggled against stronger opponents like India and Australia. Shai Hope, the ODI captain, delivered solid performances, but the team’s lower order couldn’t provide enough support. The lack of an experienced finisher was a major issue throughout the tournament. Despite their early exit, there were positive signs. Spinner Akeal Hosein was reliable in the middle overs, and all-rounder Romario Shepherd’s contributions with both bat and ball were valuable.

In T20 cricket, the West Indies experimented with their lineup, preparing for the T20 World Cup next year. Young players like Brandon King and Johnson Charles showed promise, with King scoring a memorable century against Pakistan in an exciting match.

Captain Rovman Powell’s leadership combined aggression with composure, helping the team win a home series against New Zealand. However, their performances were inconsistent, especially in the away series against England and India.

One of the season’s highlights was Obed McCoy’s emergence as a reliable bowler in the final overs. His ability to handle pressure added strength to the bowling attack. Meanwhile, Andre Russell’s return sparked discussions about balancing young talent with experienced players.

There were some events occurring on the field, involving Alzarri Joseph; this incident led to a two-match suspension and a response from the head coach, Darren Sammy, reminding fans and players of the importance of professionalism.

Joseph’s behaviour has drawn serious attention from Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the lead coach, Darren Sammy, who issued a statement that describes Joseph’s behaviour as “unacceptable.”.

Sammy, a former West Indies captain known for his steady leadership and sportsmanship, vocalized his opinion about the standards expected from his players. He expressed that, while cricket can be aggressive, it must be channeled in a way that upholds the game. Sammy’s comments connect with the West Indies’ goal of discipline with ranks, especially as young players like Joseph take responsibility.

Joseph’s absence in the final matches posed a challenge for the team, particularly within the bowling department, as his pace and accuracy were vital.

Despite this setback, the West Indies bowlers adapted quickly to fill the void of Joseph in the last two games. This incident highlighted the importance of players maintaining composure on the field.

As the season ended, attention turned to improving the structure and development of West Indies cricket. Cricket West Indies highlighted the need for: better grassroots programs, coaching, and player management to bring the team back to the top.

While 2024 didn’t bring consistent wins, it showcased the team’s passion and potential. With young talent emerging across all formats, the focus now is on building consistency and success. Fans remain hopeful as the West Indies work to turn their moments of brilliance into lasting achievements.
