Wimbledon began on June 24th, 2024, and is anticipated to end on July 14th, 2024. Wimbledon is an annual tennis tournament held in London where players from all around the world come to compete. Uniquely, Wimbledon is played on grass courts, while competitions like the US Open or the Australian Open are played on hard or clay surfaces.

Wimbledon first began in 1877, a one hundred and forty-seven-year-old tournament. To be invited to this tournament, you must be in the top one hundred and four. If twenty-eight players decline to attend, they will look at players in the top one-hundred and five to one-hundred and thirty-two, as they will try to fill in the spots. This continues until they fill up all the places.

There are one-hundred and twenty-eight tennis players that compete in Wimbledon, eight being wild card winners. Some players are given wild cards to the tournament. Players who receive a wild card are players who normally wouldn’t qualify for the tournament due to their ranking.

This is how Wimbledon determines which tennis players are invited. In Wimbledon, there are five events that tennis players compete in: women’s singles, men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. To compete at Wimbledon, players must obey the strict rules of equipment and attire.

Wimbledon players must follow certain rules to play in the tournament, a few rules being: competitors must be dressed in tennis attire that is almost entirely white, white does not include off-white, or cream, and there should be no solid mass, or panel of colouring. They must wear white to compete, which includes: their clothes, the accessories such as hats or headbands, and their shoes must be white including the shoe laces. Detailed rules can be seen on the Wimbledon official website. Some of these rules have stayed the same since the beginning of Wimbledon.

A website by the name of SportsHandle has been looking at players from 1877-2023 from both the men’s singles division and the women’s singles division. Throughout the years, Wimbledon winners have been born in the United States in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Most winners have been right-handed players, and there have been seventeen men’s champions and nineteen women’s champions. One thing that has not changed in the many decades of Wimbledon is the use of Wilson rackets. Wilson is a trusted brand used by many professional tennis players.

Now that Wimbledon has started, you can see many tennis players in action. Many well-renowned players are competing such as: Sinner Jannik from Italy, Iga Świątek from Poland, Coco Gauff from the United States of America, and Djokovic Novak from Serbia.

These players are the top two players in the men’s and women’s single divison. They have been playing for many years to get to where they are now. Currently, Jannik is ranked number one in the men’s division. He started playing around the age of thirteen, approximately nine years ago. Unfortunately, Jannik lost the quarter-final against Daniil Medvedev, a Russian player.

Like Jannik, Świątek is also ranked first in the women’s division. Świątek began pursuing tennis as a career at the age of fifteen and has been playing for eight years. Unfortunately, Świątek lost the third round, disqualifying her from the tournment.

Gauff is ranked second in the women’s division and has achieved amazing things in her career. Gauff also lost, disqualifying her from the tournament as well. Much like Gauff, Novak is also ranked second in the men’s divison. He will be playing against Alex de Minaur, an Australian player, in the quarter-finals on July 9th, 2024 at 9:45 AM EST.

Tune in to Wimbledon to see who wins this year’s title. If you wanna see more tennis and sports action this summer, don’t miss the 2024 Paris Olympics happening on July 26th, 2024 – August 11th, 2024.

The return of a legend: Serena Williams

Serena Williams, a world-renowned tennis player, has dropped hints of her return. In August 2022, Williams posted a statement that she would be retiring after winning twenty-three Grand Slam singles titles and leading the WTA rankings for three hundred and nineteen weeks (one hundred and eight six consecutively) to become regarded as the finest female tennis player of all time.

Many fans expressed their surprise and excitement when they found out about  Williams’ decision to return to professional tennis. During her retirement, Williams focused on her family, business ventures, and advocacy work. Despite her success off the court, the competitive fire that had driven her never truly dimmed.

In 2024, Williams announced that she would be returning to tennis, expressing her love for the game and her desire to compete at the highest level once again.

During an interview with ESPN Williams shared her reasons to come back, “I realized that I wasn’t done yet. Tennis has been such a huge part of my life, and I felt like there was still more I wanted to achieve. I wanted to challenge myself again, to see if I could still compete with the best.”

Tennis is a sport that requires extreme physical activity and the schedule is demanding. Since Williams is aged, her body is not able to train the same way she did when she was twenty.

This required Williams to take her training from a different approach. Though there are many challenges, Williams has always been known for her adaptability and resilience, and her return has been no different.

Williams is currently working closely with her longtime coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, where she is focusing on refining her game to suit her current physical capabilities. “Serena is smarter, more strategic now,” Mouratoglou explained. “She knows she can’t rely solely on power anymore, so we’ve worked on her positioning, her shot selection, and managing her energy throughout matches.”

Williams’ return to tennis has had a profound impact on the sport. Her comeback has reignited interest in women’s tennis, drawing attention from fans and media worldwide. Younger players, many of whom grew up idolizing Williams, have expressed their admiration for her decision to return.

“Serena has always been a role model for me,” said Coco Gauff, one of the rising stars on the WTA tour. “Seeing her come back at this stage in her career is so inspiring. It shows that age is just a number and that you can keep pushing yourself to achieve more.”

Beyond her influence on the court, Williams’ return has also highlighted her role as a global icon and advocate for social justice. Throughout her career, Williams has used her platform to speak out on issues ranging from gender equality to racial justice. Her return has given her an even larger stage to continue this important work.

As the 2024 tennis season progresses, Williams’ journey continues to captivate audiences. With the French Open and Wimbledon on the horizon, the tennis world is eager to see how she will fare in the upcoming Grand Slam tournaments. Williams has made it clear that she is not just participating; she is competing with the goal of winning.

“I’ve always been driven by the desire to be the best,” Williams said. “That hasn’t changed. I still believe I can win, and that’s what I’m working toward every day.”

Regardless of the outcome, Williams’ return to tennis is already a remarkable chapter in her storied career. It is a testament to her love for the game, her unyielding determination, and her belief in defying the odds.

As Williams continues her comeback, she serves as a powerful reminder that greatness is not just about winning titles—it’s about passion, perseverance, and the courage to chase your dreams, no matter where life takes you.

An American gymnast gets stripped of her Olympic medal at this year’s 2024 Paris Olympics. Jordan Chiles, a twenty-three-year-old gymnast, had to step down, losing her bronze medal.

On August 5th, the Olympics hosted the women’s floor artistic gymnastics finals at the Bercy Arena in Paris, France. Athletes like: Simone Biles from the United States of America, Rebeca Andrade from Brazil, Jordan Chiles from the United States of America, and Ana Bărbosu from Romania were present at the finals.

Initially, Chiles scored 13.666 on her floor routine, placing her behind the Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu. However, Head Coach Cécile Landi (USA) inquired and appealed, which increased her score to 13.766, placing her third and receiver of the bronze medal.

Unfortunately, the Romain Federation appealed against Chiles. The decision was made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that Chiles’s appeal would not be valid, as Coach Cécile Landi had inquired one minute and four seconds after the score was called (four seconds after the one-minute deadline). This automatically reversed Chile’s win, making Bărbosu the recipient of the bronze.

After hearing this news, Chiles’ friends, family, and fellow athletes expressed their support for her. Chiles’s mom, Gina, reshared many supporting posts of her daughter on X, formerly known as Twitter. Chiles’s sister also shared her thoughts on her Instagram. To show support, the official Team USA account posted a picture of Chiles and wrote, “Forever THAT GIRL.”

Olympics athletes Simone Biles and Suni Lee also shared their support for Chiles. Suni Lee shared on Instagram, “All this talk about the athlete; what about the judges? Completely unacceptable. This is awful, and I’m gutted for Jordan,” while Simone Biles wrote, “Sending you so much love, Jordan. Keep your chin up Olympic champ! We love you”.

The Romanian athlete showed great sportsmanship when she issued a statement on Instagram that read, “Jordan, my thoughts are with you. I know what you are feeling, because I’ve been through the same. But I know you’ll come back stronger. I hope from the depths of my heart that at the next Olympics, all three of us will share the same podium… This situation would not have existed if the persons in charge had respected the regulation. We athletes are not to be blamed, and the hate directed to us is painful.”

Chiles has currently distanced herself from social media for the betterment of her mental health. On August 12th, 2024  the Team USA account shared that the USA Gymnastics had submitted a letter and video evidence to CAS, verifying that head coach Cécile Landi requested an inquiry forty-seven seconds after the score was announced, within the one-minute deadline.

In the letter, they request that the CAS revise the scoring and that Chiles’ bronze medal and her score of 13.7666 be reinstated. The CAS responded, “The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted, The video footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunal’s decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it,” they concluded.

On August 13th, Team USA put out another statement on Instagram stating that CAS informed the USA gymnastics team that their rules do not allow arbitral awards to be reconsidered even if evidence has been provided. USAG shares that they were extremely disappointed with this news, but plan to do everything in their power for Jordan.

Unfortunately, this was the last statement the USA team put out. Despite the clear evidence provided by USA Gymnastics and the overwhelming support from her peers, the CAS’s decision remains final. While the circumstances are undoubtedly painful, Chiles’s resilience and the solidarity shown by her fellow gymnasts highlight the strength of the athletic community.

Canada’s Olympic Journey: From rising stars to seasoned champions

The Paris Olympics have almost come to an end, and we can see the determination and training all athletes have put in to compete at such a high level. When watching the Olympics, it is a common misconception that countries participate in the Olympic games.

When competing in the Olympics, athletes are from National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Athletes are chosen from the territories of two hundred and six NOCs and then compete at the Games to represent their NOC.

This was the same for Canadian athletes. They compete at trials, and then they are chosen for the national team to represent their country. In this year’s Summer 2024 Paris Olympics, Canada’s team consists of three hundred and fifteen athletes competing in a total of forty sports.

These athletes compete in a variety of sports, from boxing to archery to even equestrian. With the Olympics coming to an end, the Canadian teams have done a phenomenal job representing Canada. Canada is currently in eleventh place with seventeen medals in counting: four gold, four silver, and eight bronze.

The inclusion of new sports such as skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing in this year’s Olympics has presented Canadian athletes with opportunities. They are fostering their talent in these sports, with numerous athletes making their mark in international competitions.

Canadian athletes are making their mark in many sports like swimming, athletics, rowing, and cycling. A few athletes who have made huge contributions to all of this are: Andre de Grasse (athletics), Damian Warner (athletics), Summer McIntosh (swimming), Penny Oleksiak (swimming), and Kelsey Mitchell (cycling).

Andre de Grasse is a twenty-nine-year-old athletics athlete who is a six-time Olympic medalist. You also saw Damian Warner at the Olympics this year. Warner is a 34-year-old athlete and a four-time Olympic medalist who specializes in decathlon and plans to defend his title.

Summer McIntosh, a seventeen-year-old swimmer rising star, has done the impossible. McIntosh has won three gold medals in the women’s two-hundred-meter butterfly, the women’s two-hundred-meter individual medley, and the four-hundred-meter individual medley. She has also won silver in the four-hundred-meter freestyle event. McIntosh became the first Canadian to win three gold medals at a single Olympic game.

Another athlete you can see at this year’s Olympics is Aaron Brown. Brown competes in athletics, which is essentially track and field. He specializes in the one-hundred-meter and two-hundred-meter races. The thirty-two-year-old athlete has been competing for fifteen years and won six major medals in his career.

He has had the opportunity to compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he won silver in the 4 x 100 meters relay; the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he won bronze in the 4 x 100 meters relay; and the 2024 Paris Olympics. At this year’s Olympics, Brown faced a major setback. Brown was disqualified from the one-hundred-meter race after a false start. He was looking forward to taking another Olympic medal for this event, but unfortunately, he was not able to do that. Though he still has a chance to secure a medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay.

Canada has been playing phenomenally in team sports to secure their spot in the quarterfinals. A few team sports that Canada has been playing are soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Currently, the men’s basketball team is set to compete in the quarterfinals against France on August 5th, 2024, at 12:00 pm EST. The women’s basketball team unfortunately did not qualify for the quarterfinals after they lost against Nigeria by nine points.

The Canadian women’s soccer team was determined to defend their title in Paris, but unfortunately were disqualified. The women’s team qualified for the quarterfinals, where they played against Germany. Canada suffered a 4-2 penalty shootout loss and is now on their way home.

As the Olympics draw to a close, I am proud to say that the Canadian team has demonstrated great potential across a variety of sports.
