In recent years, Canada has witnessed a dramatic shift in governance and policy under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government. These changes, particularly in areas of personal freedoms and property rights, have drawn alarming parallels to the centralized control tactics historically employed by totalitarian regimes. From the banning of firearms to increasingly intrusive housing policies, Canada is rapidly sliding down a dangerous path that threatens its democratic foundations.

A History Lesson in Authoritarianism

To understand the gravity of Canada’s current trajectory, one must look to history. Totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany and Soviet communism were marked by their systematic erosion of individual freedoms under the guise of safety, equality, or national security.

1. Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler gained initial support by promising to restore order and prosperity. However, this came at the expense of civil liberties, freedom of expression, and private ownership. Incremental restrictions, such as the disarming of the population, ensured that citizens were powerless to resist.
2. Soviet Communism, led by figures like Joseph Stalin, similarly centralized control by disarming citizens, collectivizing property, and implementing strict government oversight over daily life. The promises of equality and security gave way to oppression and economic collapse.

Both regimes justified their actions with rhetoric about public safety and collective good—a tactic eerily mirrored in recent Canadian policies.

Trudeau’s Assault on Freedoms

Gun Control: Disarming Law-Abiding Citizens

The Liberal government’s ongoing efforts to ban firearms have escalated dramatically. Since the May 2020 ban on 1,500 models of firearms, this list has grown to include over 2,000 by 2023, with an additional 324 varieties recently outlawed. These bans target firearms labeled as “assault-style,” despite these weapons being legal for hunting or sport shooting.

Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc claims these measures aim to keep “military weapons” off Canadian streets. Yet, data from groups like the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) highlight that these policies disproportionately affect law-abiding gun owners while doing little to address actual gun crime. Crime statistics have shown that firearm-related violence has increased over the past eight years, despite successive gun control measures.

Disturbingly, some of the confiscated firearms are being sent to Ukraine as military aid—a striking irony as Canada disarms its citizens while aiding another country’s defense.

Housing Policies: Seizing Control of Private Property

Trudeau’s government has also set its sights on private property under the banner of solving the housing crisis. Measures include:

• Cracking down on short-term rentals, such as Airbnbs, by removing tax benefits for property owners.
• Proposing stricter regulations to “unlock” housing, essentially penalizing individuals who profit from their investments.

While addressing housing shortages is important, these policies undermine property rights, a cornerstone of democratic societies. Governments are effectively dictating how Canadians can use their private property, setting a dangerous precedent for further interventions.

The Slippery Slope: What Comes Next?

History warns us of the progression from disarmament to broader governmental control. Without the ability to defend their rights, citizens become increasingly vulnerable to authoritarian overreach. Today, it’s firearms and housing; tomorrow, it could be greater control over income, land, or even personal freedoms like speech and assembly.

Trudeau has already hinted at measures to convert short-term rentals into long-term housing. How long until spare rooms or personal properties are seized under the guise of housing crises? The government’s rhetoric of fairness and safety is alarmingly similar to the justifications used by regimes that stripped citizens of their autonomy.

The Danger to Democracy

At its core, democracy thrives on the balance of power between citizens and the state. Measures like firearm bans and property restrictions disrupt this balance, consolidating power within the government. The Liberal Party’s reliance on Orders in Council to bypass parliamentary debate further illustrates their willingness to sideline democratic processes.

Canada is not yet a totalitarian state, but the warning signs are clear. Policies that chip away at personal freedoms, while cloaked in the language of safety and equity, are a direct threat to the liberties Canadians have long cherished.
