Poem by Gloria O’koye
No parent should bury a child.
No parent should have to
Demand!
Answers on what happened to their child.
From coast to coast,
Ocean to ocean,
No parent should ever blame themselves
While mourning for their child.
Why society judges on grief but for optics
Shout out safe space!
While gossiping on parents crashing out
And mental breakdowns.
How can advocacy lack empathy on
Guarded hearts?
Do they lack training on the stages of grief
But temporary stay while camera, lights
And action is shining down?
Disappearing to the next trending story.
The headlines move forward while a family
Is left behind, seeking comfort to soothe
Their troubled minds.
Having nightmares
Terrorizing every waking moment.
Watching their baby’s faces fade when exiting
The dream realms,
Crying out their names to stay.
Hearing the sweet melodic
That no one would understand
Except the inseparable bond between parent and child.
Gone too soon,
And unnatural yet was forced to be seen as normal.
Say their names!
For someone truly faces a second death Once they are forgotten.
As soon as their memories slowly fade away.
All parents should deserve closures
No parent should be left to wonder…
What happen to their child
In this ice-cold place
Where our souls are forced to stay.
Where looking at the bridge and train
Tracks sound tempting.
Or the pills and gas leaks seem to ease
To be closer to a child.
In the lowest of low moments,
Where gaslighting is prevalent.
Where devil’s voice seems louder,
Is when people need to come closer.
Because unconditional love
And persistence for the truth
Is the underdog answer.
Wish more people stood up
For the results to reach its full potential
Power.
