The Poetic Word

Grief & Love

BY GLORIA O’KOYE

Alfred once said

“Tis better to have loved and lost,

Then never to have loved at all”

Words so true to its core.

Yet it stings like an open wound

Coming into contact with rubbing alcohol.

To have loved yet with the hefty price

Of having to part ways.

Through sickness and health,

Till death do us part.

Love will always be followed by grief,

When this realm together comes

Crashing down.

Years countdown like showers from

Scattered clouds.

Please cherish one another,

Visitations to the grave

May surpass time spent

When the bodies and souls were still one.

Bittersweet memories,

Captured in frames and stories

Passed down to generations.

Pure love will shine out like the sparkling

Northern snow on the ground.

Grief is like bitter herbs

But it’ll heal gradually because of love.

Grief is not negative,

In moderation.

It’s testimony for one’s love.

Experiencing true unconditional love,

Even death or parting ways

Will never be tainted by regrets.

To mourn and moving forward,

With the treasures

Of what true love

Felt.
