Outgrowing the City

BY GLORIA O’KOYE

Busy streets

People partying late into the nights.

Laughter, arguments

With sirens that shout like voiceovers

On a rush,

Hidden food treasures that are opened at forbidden times.

24/7 rides

Or walking with friends

Ordering drivers through phone apps,

A huge upgrade instead of waiting on benches by city parks, or beaches

After missing the last bus on certain routes

Memories still made for all the fun and wild times everyone had

Some were meant to be in the city for their entire lives.

Couldn’t imagine what it is like

To hear complete silence

Taking over an overworked mind

Some couldn’t see themselves outside the concrete jungle,

Buy goods outside their go-to corner store

Some are so used to the drama

The gossips spinning around the block

With flashing lights signalling

Officers on the go

Remaining in their place of comfort even though their souls are polluted inside out

From all the smoke the buildings produce

Covering the clean air

For some, the city is only the stepping stone

They want to retire into the farmland and nature just as how their ancestors roamed

As much as they get homesick for months when they are secluded from the rest

But the small towns, where everyone knows,

Children playing late at night with no worries..

Outgrowing the city life that they had always called home
