The Poetic Word

Peace In The 6ix

BY GLORIA O’KOYE

I wish one by one

They would think twice

In keeping the Six alive.

Wish someone could tell them

There is no shame

In directing your life.

The human in us all wants to live

In this ideal fantasy.

But how many have the heart

To put in that work

So these visions will become

A new reality.

Instead of being around the bush,

Show that the path of the bullet

Will strike generational wounds.

If it’s not nightmares, or addictions,

It’ll be your loved ones getting the blues.

How many times the most honest prayers were within those courtrooms.

Behind the prison walls the glimmer hope

Battles with lost souls

Being trapped in small rooms.

Wish these babies knew

That the label will haunt them

Even though the community continues to fight for them.

Wish these babies knew what’s it like without

Twisting their necks every second.

If they knew the cost of this destructive road

Would they really glorify the road of being a gunman?
