Students battle procrastination with proven study strategies for midterms

“The ever-so dreaded midterm season is here.”

The ever-so dreaded midterm season is here. Midterms roll around like an unwanted guest at your life party, and suddenly you realize; you don’t quite know how to study.

Picture this; it’s 10:00 PM. You’re surrounded by a fortress of textbooks, half-empty coffee mugs, sticky notes clued to your wall, and your phone, glowing, tempting, mocking. You swear you’ll open your notes in five minutes. Then TikTok happens. Two hours vanish. You look up. Panic. That, my friend, is the classic procrastination trap.

To break out, you need structure. You’re not just “studying,” you’re planning an assault on your exam. Here’s how to get tactical.

Prep your environment

Before you even open a book:

Sleep matters — if your brain’s running on fumes, it’s like trying to charge a phone with a banana

Switch scenery — your bedroom desk is great… until it becomes the nap zone. Try: the library, a café, or even a park bench (weather permitting). A little change can refresh your focus.

Cue the right music — classical, lo-fi, instrumental beats — these can block distractions better than your “Do Not Disturb” setting.

Kill distractions — phone on silent, social media locked behind Fort Knox walls, TV off (no, not “just one episode”).

Snack smart — apples, nuts, maybe some dark chocolate. Save the candy binge for the victory celebration

Study techniques that actually stick (not just cram & hope)

Here are a handful of methods that do more than fill your brain with inertia:

SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite, review)

Don’t dive headfirst into chapters. First skim (survey) for headings and summaries. Then pose questions (“What is this about?”). Read for answers. Recite what you remember. Finally, review. It’s like reading with purpose instead of blind scrolling

Retrieval practice

Close the book. Test yourself. Can you explain it without peeking? Use flashcards or practice questions. The effort to remember strengthens retention. (usa.edu)

Spaced practice

Don’t cram Tuesday to Wednesday. Spread your studying over days. Your brain will thank you. In fact, letting ideas fade then recalling them helps memory growth. (usa.edu)

Feynman technique

Explain ideas like you’re teaching a five-year-old (or your pet). If you stumble, you’ve found your weak spots. Study those harder. (usa.edu)

Colour-coded notes & mind maps

Use colours to highlight key points or draw a mind map. Seeing visual relationships helps your brain build connections. Branching, doodling, colour, yes, it’s academic, not childish.

Add some movement + bedtime wisdom

Exercise before studying — even 10–20 minutes of movement boosts blood flow, clears mental cobwebs, and helps memory. (usa.edu)

Study before bed — reviewing key points right before sleep can help your brain file them into long-term storage. Sleep is where the magic happens. (usa.edu)

Putting it all together (without losing your sanity)

Here’s a quick “midterm war plan”:

  • Pick a few days ahead and block short study sessions (30–60 min) using spaced practice.
  • Use SQ3R or PQ4R when tackling chapters.
  • Test yourself via retrieval practice: flashcards, prompts, self-quizzing.
  • For tricky concepts, grab your Feynman hat and teach them aloud.
  • Make your notes pop with color and visual maps.
  • Before each session: quick move break, set your space, silence distractions.
  • End sessions with a bedtime review, then actually sleep.

Midterm season might feel like a monstrous beast, but with good strategies, you can tame it, or at least bribe it with coffee. Study smart, not just hard, and give yourself the tools (and laughs) to survive. When your exam day comes, you’ll walk in with confidence, not dread.
