Summer Travel Tips

Summer is here and you’re planning your vacation.  You’ve done your research and know where you’re going, when you’re going and how you’re getting there.  Unfortunately, the process of getting to your destination can be anything but relaxing, thanks to long lines, security checks, airport delays and lost luggage when you are planning to fly.  If you drive you have to worry about which direction you’re going to travel and if you can trust your GPS if you’ve never been there before.   Eating while on vacation is another thing you will need to navigate.

Travelling can be a very stressful experience and if you’re stressed it’s very difficult for you to stay on track and lose weight.  If you still have a few pounds to lose in order to fit into your bathing suit, being stressed is not the right way to begin your vacation.  One way to reduce the stress is to make sure you eat regular, healthy meals. Eating regularly can keep you energized and keep hunger at bay.  Keep to as regular an eating schedule as you can while you’re away.  Don’t leave the house hungry. Eat a balanced meal as close to your departure time as possible so that you don’t get stuck starving and have no good food options available where you are.

You’re going to be tempted to cheat with alcohol, junk food and larger portion sizes but remember… everything in moderation.  Don’t beat yourself up if you have a glass of wine or hamburger.  You are on vacation and you will probably want to cheat on your diet but smaller portion sizes are the best.  Start by eating only half of what the restaurant serves you.  If you’re still hungry you can eat some more but don’t stuff yourself so that you become bloated and feel uncomfortable.

If there is an exercise facility on your vacation, don’t be afraid to use it.  Act the same as if you were at home and get at least 20 – 30 minutes of exercise in a day.  If you don’t feel like going to the gym and you’re at an all inclusive resort, join their activities program.  Perhaps you can do beach volleyball or beach soccer.  If you’re camping go for a walk or a hike. If you’re cottaging, go for a swim or get out and explore cottage country.  Whatever it is that you love to do, just get out and move.

Vacation time is meant to be fun and relaxing so enjoy your vacation and get back on track if you fall off the wagon.  Get back to your routine and enjoy the journey.
