Toronto Raptors decade in review

Published

on

BY KAYLA KARIM

Looking back at the Toronto Raptors in 2019 almost feels like reliving a fan’s wildest dream, but like everything else in life, you don’t usually reach the top without having to struggle to get there. At the beginning of this decade in 2010, started off as another rebuild year for the Raptors organization. Chris Bosh left in the off-season to sign with Miami and, as a result young gun DeMar Derozan was drafted. Dwane Casey was then added to the team as the head coach that was going to turn this franchise around. However, not much progress was made until Kyle Lowry was acquired in 2012. In 2013, after a rough few years, Masai Ujiri was hired as the General Manager in hopes that he was able to push this team to new heights. And that he did.

Masai managed things differently. He was able to secure top players while trading away ones that weren’t progressing as well as they were expected to. Another addition came shortly after, being none other than Drake. The Canadian rapper was named the Global Ambassador – again in hopes to advance the team in ways it’s never seen before.

For the first time in five years Toronto became the Atlantic Division Champions in 2014 but lost in the first round. That trend continued the following year – this time they were swept by the Washington Wizards.

When 2016 rolled around, things were looking up for the city of Toronto and some may argue that the year was a high point in this emotional roller coaster of a decade.

Toronto hosted the NBA All Star festivities on the coldest weekend the city has ever seen welcoming the biggest stars around the Association and then went on to achieve their first ever 50 win season.

The Raptors won their first playoff series in fifteen years, followed by beating Miami in the second round where they would face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers putting their post season run to a halt. LeBron James and his very solid Cleveland squad returned in 2017 spoiling the Raptors playoff hopes with a sweep.

The beginning of 2018 was off to a great start with players like DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry becoming a new power duo in the league, breaking personal and franchise records. When the Raptors advanced to the second round in the post season, fans hoped that they wouldn’t have to experience another early exit but it was the Cavaliers once again who got 4 wins in row once again. It was back to the drawing board for the Raptors and their front office staff.

As a result of the early exit and despite being awarded the Coach of the Year, Masai Ujiri came to the decision to fire head coach Dwane Casey in May 2018 of the offseason.

But a few months later, in July 2018, Masai worked his magic again in executing one of the most unexpected moves when he traded fan favourite DeMar DeRozan in return for three- time Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs.

The rest as we all know was history in the making – Kawhi led the Toronto Raptors in a very successful playoff run where they surprised the world and won Canada’s first ever NBA Championship.

On November 6th, 2024, the West Indies won by eight wickets, highlighting players like: Keacy Carty and Brandon King, whose powerful centuries led the West Indies to victory.

However, the team’s success was overshadowed by the on-field incident involving Alzarri Joseph. This incident led to a two-match suspension and a response from the head coach Darren Sammy, reminding fans and players of the importance of professionalism.

As the series began, both teams were ready to go head-to-head. England was looking forward to dominating the ODI, after some challenging series. While West Indies was focused on demonstrating that their young squad was able to hold its own on the international stage.

Players like Carty and King have displayed great batting, each reaching the century mark, which established a lead in the final ODI that England could not overcome.

Carty’s innings showed us his patience and precise shot selection, highlighting the controlled aggression that provided stability when the team needed it the most. King, known for this power-hitting, complemented Carty’s style by scoring rapidly and keeping the English bowlers on their feet.

Together, the duo scored centuries that underscored the West Indies’ batting lineup. Their contributions were significant to securing the series win, proving that the team’s batting can match the level of its past legend.

The series was not without any incidents. Alzarri Joseph, one of the team’s leading pacers, became involved in a controversial on-field incident, which eventually led to his suspension for the final two ODIs. While the details of this incident have not been fully disclosed, Joseph’s behaviour has drawn serious attention from the Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the lead coach, Darren Sammy, who issued a statement that describes Joseph’s behaviour as “unacceptable.”

Sammy, a former West Indies captain known for his steady leadership and sportsmanship, vocalized his opinion about the standards expected from his players. He expressed that, while cricket can be aggressive, it must be channeled in a way that upholds the game. Sammy’s comments connect with the West Indies’ goal of discipline with ranks, especially as young players like Joseph take responsibility.

With Joseph’s absence in the final matches, it posed a challenge for the team, particularly within the bowling department, as his pace and accuracy were vital. Despite this setback, the West Indies bowlers adapted quickly to fill the void of Joseph in the last two games. This incident highlighted the importance of players to maintain composure on the field.

This controversy revealed the areas where continued growth is necessary, specifically in fostering an atmosphere of discipline and respect on and off the field. With young talent emerging, the West Indies’ future appears promising. Coach Sammy’s call for professionalism will likely influence how the team approaches future training and international events, reinforcing a culture that prides itself on sportsmanship alongside skills.

This series win has offered fans a glimpse into the team’s potential as they strive for consistency. The victory over England has provided a strong foundation for the team as they look forward to the upcoming series and tournaments. They will soon be heading to Bangladesh at the end of this year with eight games.

For now, the Caribbean should celebrate this well-deserved victory that is both a triumph and a learning experience, which will play a crucial role in shaping the West Indies’ future in international cricket.

At the end, this ODI series was more than just a win, it was a statement from the West Indies cricket team – a bold reminder that they remain a team to watch, and as they grow, they may reclaim their place amongst cricket giants.
