Boa Vista Children Gain Lifesaving Care

“When a child can see a doctor without cost or delay, an entire community begins to breathe a little easier.”

The sound of children laughing should never compete with the fear of whether they can see a doctor.

Yet for many families living on the Cape Verdean island of Boa Vista, access to pediatric healthcare has long been uncertain. When your child develops a high fever in the middle of the night, or a persistent cough refuses to disappear, every kilometer between home and medical care feels much longer than it really is.

That is why the opening of the Consultório Solidário de Saúde Infantil (CSSI) is a promise. A promise that every child, regardless of their family’s income, deserves the chance to grow up healthy.

The new clinic will provide permanent, free healthcare for children from birth to 14 years old, bringing reliable pediatric services directly to the island. The initiative builds on a successful model already operating on the neighbouring island of Sal, proving that when good ideas work, they deserve to be expanded.

Behind this achievement is an uncommon partnership.

RIU Hotels & Resorts joined forces with the NGO África Avanza, Fundação Bem Estar and Cape Verde’s Ministry of Health to create something that no single organization could have accomplished alone. It is a reminder that lasting community change happens when public institutions, businesses and nonprofit organizations decide that children are everyone’s responsibility.

Since opening its doors in May, the clinic has already cared for 293 children through 353 medical consultations. Those numbers tell one story. Parents no longer have to wonder where to turn.

Technology is also playing a quiet but important role. Advanced digital medical records will allow physicians to monitor each child’s health over time, improving continuity of care instead of treating every visit as a brand-new beginning.

What makes this project especially significant is that it was designed with longevity in mind. Too often, communities celebrate ribbon cuttings only to watch services disappear once funding ends. This clinic avoids that familiar cycle. RIU has committed the financial resources necessary to secure operations through 2029, ensuring salaries, equipment, technical support and healthcare systems remain in place for years to come.

During the inauguration, RIU’s Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, Naomi Riu, explained that the initiative reflects the company’s deep commitment to children in the communities where it operates. Fellow board member Félix Casado emphasized that the clinic demonstrates how meaningful public-private collaboration can create lasting social impact.

Their words matter, but the true measure of success will not be found in speeches.

It will be found in children who recover more quickly because they were diagnosed sooner. In parents who spend less time worrying and more time raising their families. In communities that become healthier because prevention replaces crisis.

Across the world, conversations about sustainability often focus on carbon emissions, buildings and business metrics. Those goals matter. But sustainability also means investing in people, especially children whose futures depend on decisions adults make today.

When a community invests in its youngest citizens, it is building the foundation for a healthier future, one child at a time.
